"There are places I remember..."

In your journal, compile a list of...
   ... five experiences (events) and
   ... five individuals (characters)
from your own life that you can draw from in future writing.

Each item should include a short explanation of why you believe this to be a good source of inspiration.

For events, write a brief summary of what happened.

For characters, write a brief description of the individual and his/her role.

**Know that you are going to be using/sharing some of these later with the class**

Based on the shirt in this picture, what can you determine about the man who wears it?

Write a scene in which you reveal this character using a description of this shirt to convey personality, status, situation, and attitude.

new thoughts on Character ("Bird by Bird" reflection)

2/4/2015

Read the chapter on "Character" (p. 44-53) in Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. (click for PDF)

After you have reading the selection, respond to the questions below. NOTE: Each should be at least a half page (so as to meet the full-page-or-more requirement for a journal entry)

ONE - Many elements of character and character development involve asking questions. What are some of the most important/revealing questions you discovered as you read? Why do you believe these will be helpful as you develop your own characters?

TWO - Lamott references a number of quotations throughout the chapter. Which quotation resonated most with you as a writer? That is, which quote did you find most thought-provoking in regards to your own writing? Be sure to explain why and what effect you think it will have as you begin creating characters of your own.

A Couple of Characters

2/3/2015

Using the image provided, create a scene including these characters or describe the image in detail. Go through the basics:
Who are they?
Where are they?
Where are they going?
Where did they come from?
Why are they going or coming from anywhere?
How do they feel about each other?
How do they feel about themselves?
How do they feel about the pigeons?
(and yes, that’s a legitimate question)
Do not write any dialogue. Focus on a narrative description of the characters in your scene. Be specific and detailed.
